In Japan, it is now March 11th, 2016. 5 years have passed since the 3.11 Earthquake in Tohoku, Japan.
To me personally, 5 years seems like such a long time ago. It was before I met my fiance, it was when I was still in University while living with my parents, it was when I was still ignorant about so many things that were happening in the world. But to those who were affected by the devastation that hit in 2011, 5 years must not be nearly enough to recover from the pains and memories of that day. It is true that time is relative and not absolute.
For the rest of us, it is so easy to forget about the things that happened 5 years ago, yet for many, they wish they could but can’t. For this reason, it is important for us to REMEMBER: not to remember the destruction and violence that the earthquake left that day but to remember that there are still people suffering today; REMEMBER not the things that they’ve lost but to remember the things that they need now that maybe we can help provide; REMEMBER not the sadness and hopelessness but remember their strength in rebuilding their future with happiness, hope and courage.
REMEMBER that we were once united to show support by holding events, raising awareness and collecting every penny we could find. REMEMBER the many smiles that we helped create on many faces. REMEMBER that we did make a difference in our own little ways.
Please lend us your help once again to support their recovery effort, especially for the children that will be the key to Japan’s future.
The New Japanese Canadian Association of Calgary is currently accepting donations that will be forwarded to a charitable organization in Japan.* You may send in your donation cheque made payable to NJCA by mailing it to the Japanese Cultural Centre.**
